The sod cutting (ground breaking) ceremony on the site of the new Portchester Community Centre is due to take place on Wednesday 8 February. Executive Leader of Fareham Borough Council, Councillor Sen Woodward will be joined by the Leader of Hampshire County Council, Councillor Ken Thornber, as they dig the first soil for the new centre.
Executive Leader of Fareham Borough Council, Councillor Sen Woodward, said: "I'm delighted to be 'breaking the ground' on this exciting new Portchester Community Centre. As an excellent example of partnership working, it is very appropriate that the Leader of Hampshire County Council, Councillor Ken Thornber, will be joining me at this special 'Sod Cutting' ceremony, having approached him for help with this important project. The new centre will be a fantastic facility for the people of Portchester. The new building will include a new children's centre, provision for a pre-school, a large multi-purpose hall, meeting rooms and a kitchen."
Leader of Hampshire County Council, Councillor Ken Thornber, said: "This 2million project initially funded by the County Council, is an exciting project for Portchester, and will provide residents with a wonderful new, modern facility that better meets the needs of the local community.
The provision of a new Childrens Centre is an important part of this project. The Centre will provide families with easy access to advice and a range of different support services, to help give children the best possible start in life.
In addition to being funded by the County Council, the design, construction and procurement of the new building is also being managed and overseen by Hampshire. Once the new community centre has been completed, the old building (located next to the new building) will be demolished and the site landscaped within 12 weeks.
