Portchester's new £2 million community centre has been officially opened by the Executive Leader of Fareham Borough Council, Councillor Seán Woodward and Hampshire County Council Leader, Councillor Ken Thornber.
The development has been jointly funded by the two authorities and today's opening was marked by the unveiling a commemorative plaque at the site. Fareham Borough Council consulted with the local community about what they wanted their new centre to be like, and commissioned and oversaw the project. The design and building of the new centre was managed by Hampshire County Council.
The centre in Westlands Grove includes a brand new multi-purpose hall, meeting rooms, pre-school and kitchen. It has been built next to the site of the old community centre which dated back to the 1960s and became unfit for use.
Executive Leader of Fareham Borough Council, Councillor Seán Woodward said: "Many people in Portchester are already benefiting from what's on offer at the community centre. Since the doors opened to the public in January the facility has been widely used by community groups and classes for both young and old. Activities available include badminton, dance classes, indoor bowls, a toy library and outreach services for young families. Today's official opening cements the new centre's place at the heart of the community. I am delighted that by working in partnership Fareham Borough Council and Hampshire County Council have been able to jointly fund the construction of this fantastic new building."
Hampshire County Council Leader, Councillor Ken Thornber said: "These new facilities are a wonderful addition for Portchester and it is good to see so many people making good use of them. Initially funded by the County Council, the project now provides local people with a fresh and modern facility that better meets their needs, and thanks to the provision of a brand new Children's Centre, families can also now access a range of different support services so that youngsters in Portchester can have the best possible start in life."
A public open day at the centre with taster sessions will take place this summer.
