Since its humble beginnings as a floral competition Fareham in Bloom - Filling Fareham with Flowers has developed beyond all expectations. Organised by our parks section and run by a group of dedicated volunteers, it is one of the largest of its kind on the south coast. Volunteers work throughout the year to encourage people to take part in parks projects, planning new ideas, designing displays and running competitions. This is supported by many sponsors who offer funding for the eye-catching displays on our roundabouts and who provide the wonderful prizes and trophies for our presentation event each September. We place a strong emphasis on environmental education and activities are organised to reflect the richness and array of parks in the Borough and to involve as many people as possible. The aim is to make the area a green, bright and cheerful place to live, work, or visit and develop an awareness of the importance of our parks, woodlands and countryside. We hope you will show off your horticultural talents and help to make Fareham bloom.
You can get involved in your local parks and countryside through a host of activities, workshops and events to support Fareham in Bloom. Each autumn we give away sacks of bulbs and over the past 12 years, with the help of our residents, we have planted more than four million daffodils, which bring a carpet of gold each spring. You can get full details of these and other activities on request.
Fareham allotment competition forms part of the annual programme. It has categories for plot holders and young allotment gardeners. Schools are actively encouraged to use gardening as part of curricular activity, with an award for best schools gardening projects. The award for Outstanding Horticultural Excellence is our highest accolade. Presented annually, it is open to previous years' winners or individuals who have dedicated their time to specific horticultural projects that benefit the community.
The Gardens Open scheme was launched in 2005 to celebrate the 10th anniversary of Fareham in Bloom. It was such a success that it was decided to make it an annual event. On one day each year, award winning gardens from previous Fareham in Bloom community gardening competitions are open to the public. You can find more information by visiting the Gardens Open Scheme page.
Entry is free and open to anyone who lives or has a business within the Borough. Gardening is fun and while it recognises the efforts of individuals with a passion for plants and gardening, the competition is also light-hearted and brightens up our local communities. We would like to hear about your gardening talents.
Judging such a large gardening competition involves many people and a considerable amount of time. All judging for the main competition is carried out during the first two weeks of July, when a team of judges visits entrants to seek out budding horticulturists.
The judges are gardeners, some of whom are from horticultural groups in the Borough and many who have been winners of the competition in previous years.
A reception for prize giving is held in September each year. More than 200 people attend, including award winners and anyone who has entered the competition.
