We asked

We asked residents, tenants, and prospective tenants to comment on our priorities set out in our refreshed Daedalus Vision Review.

The Council acquired the land at Daedalus in March 2015 and since then key achievements at Daedalus include:

• An increase in flights by 50%
• The creation of 650 jobs
• The Innovation Centre reached 100% occupancy within a year with a £7m extension opened in 2018
• The opening of Café Zero 5
• Winning two South Coast Property Awards – Development of the Year and Business Park Innovation of the Year

The vision plan for the next three to five years includes:

• Providing new commercial buildings for employment opportunities
• More community facilities including a heritage facility, Daedalus Common, play facilities and a gate guardian.
• Improved airport infrastructure, including runway lights to increase safety for pilots and the Marine and Coastguard Agency, aircraft parking and navigational equipment to aid pilots with precision landing approaches
• Considering expansion opportunities at the airport, including increased flight movements

You Said

172 people responded to the consultation, most of whom attended the breakfast and evening meetings.

83% of the respondents were local residents, the others included business park tenants, residents of other parts of Fareham, pilots who use the airport and people who visited or had an interest in the area.

Most responses were consistent across the three review priorities. The main themes were as follows:

• There was roughly an even split of views between people who are very positive about the Daedalus project and support current and proposed future uses for the site, and those who are concerned about the impact of both current and future use on the local area.

• People are pleased that the site is being used for aviation and related industries, reflecting the site’s history and heritage and want this to continue.

• The main issues that residents are concerned about the impact of more business use of the site and expansion of the airport (and increased aircraft traffic) in terms of noise, pollution and road traffic.

• Future community facilities should also celebrate and reflect Daedalus's aviation heritage.

• People are interested in the long-term plans for the site including the expansion of the airport and further development.

• Future business development should provide job opportunities for all local people, not just specialist or skilled workers in the aviation industry.

• A balance should be maintained between future business use and leisure use/protection of green space on the site.

• Future community facilities should also celebrate and reflect Daedalus's aviation heritage.

We did

The survey showed that people welcomed and supported the Council's vision for the site, reflecting the Daedalus heritage, but we need to recognise concerns about the potential impact of any expansion on the local area and its residents.

We will use the feedback to inform more detailed planning of future development as we implement the Vision.
