Fareham Borough Council has agreed plans to spend £1.5m on refurbishing the swimming pools at Fareham Leisure Centre.
The existing facilities are over 30 years old and in need of modernising. As well as the two pools, the refurbishment will also include new changing rooms, replacing the old pool water filtration plant and modernising of the exterior of the building itself.
The works are likely to begin in summer 2014 and will be carried out by current contractors Sport & Leisure Management Ltd (SLM). The Council will work with SLM to ensure that swimming facilities are still provided while the pool is closed. This may involve the construction of a temporary pool facility.
Executive Spokesman for Leisure and Community at Fareham Borough Council, Cllr Connie Hockley, said: "As the pool was opened in 1979 it's understandably now starting to look a bit tired. The leisure centre has 60,000 customer visits every month, so they will soon have even better facilities to enjoy. This investment is great news for the Borough and I am looking forward to seeing it come to fruition next year."
Ian Cook, Area Contract Manager for Sports and Leisure Management, said: "Fareham leisure centre is a fantastic venue with very loyal customers, this refurbishment will provide them with much improved facilities with a modern, fresh feel about them. The council has always been very supportive and this refurbishment will certainly ensure the centre looks its very best and continues to provide the high standards that saw the centre receive the award of Leisure Centre of the Year 2013."
