Portchester Community School has been invited to lease and operate the newly built Portchester Community Centre when it opens in late October 2012.
The new £2 million building is currently being constructed at Westlands Grove, Portchester and will include a range of community rooms as well as a Children's Centre. The new building will replace the existing Community Centre, on the same site, which is currently operated by Portchester Community Association.
Following a decision to build a new Community Centre, the Council invited expressions of interest from local community groups to run the new facility. Detailed business plans were submitted by Portchester Community Association and Portchester Community School and assessed by a panel of Councillors in May.
Councillors were particularly impressed with the fact that the School already runs the Portchester Day Centre, are involved in the "4 Children" partnership which runs the local Children's Centre, their commitment to sports for the disabled, the newly formed breakfast club for fathers and the School's ambition to manage the local youth centre.
The panel's recommendation was then endorsed by a special meeting of the Council's Executive last night. Executive Leader of the Council, Councillor Seán Woodward said "this is an important decision for both the Council and the people of Portchester. The school has an excellent track record of running community facilities and we look forward to developing a long and successful partnership with them".
Headteacher of Portchester Community School, Roger Matthews said "I speak on behalf of the school when I say that we are delighted to be given this opportunity to further work with the community of Portchester and the Council in operating this fantastic new building which is a real asset for Portchester".
Council officers will be meeting with the School in the near future to finalise the terms of the lease and the arrangements for marketing and booking rooms in the new Community Centre.
