Fareham Borough Council has awarded £3,440 to Portchester Community Bowls Club after their application for Community Funding to purchase new equipment was approved.
Formed in 1982, the club based at the Portchester Community Centre enables members to play indoor short mat bowls. Short mat bowls is a variation of lawn bowls in which two players attempt to score points by rolling a heavy ball (the bowl) along a flat surface, aiming nearer to the jack than their opponents.
The club applied for funding because their old mats were timeworn and very heavy, making them difficult to set up and put away. The Community Fund grant has been used to purchase new lighter mats as well as a roller which can be used to store the mats and transport them more easily.
Executive Leader for Fareham Borough Council, Councillor Seán Woodward said "the purchase of new equipment paid for by the Community Fund will improve participant enjoyment for years to come".
The Community Fund is available to support projects that benefit the local community or environment within the Borough of Fareham. Any resident, or organisation based in the Borough can apply for money for one off capital funds from the Community Fund.
