Press Release

Christmas in Fareham

The countdown to Christmas was officially launched in Fareham on Friday (24 November), as thousands of people turned out for a festive celebration with a difference.

For the first time John the Winter Giant visited the town centre. The 6m tall giant made his way down West Street captivating crowds with a magical display. He was joined by children from a local performing arts group who presented him with a lantern to light his way. He then helped the Mayor of Fareham, Cllr Geoff Fazackarley, to switch on Fareham's Christmas lights.

Visitors were also treated to appearances by Ferneham Hall's panto stars, children's activities at Westbury Manor museum and the chance to meet Santa's reindeer.

Executive Member for Leisure and Community at Fareham Borough Council, Cllr Sue Bell, said: "We decided to do something different this year to start our Christmas countdown and it was wonderful to see so many people enjoying themselves. John the Winter giant certainly helped bring the festive spirit to Fareham in a 'big' way!"

The event was brought to Fareham in partnership with Hampshire Cultural Trust. Annabel Cook, Head of Combined Arts at Hampshire Cultural Trust said: "It was great to be a part of this new take on the Fareham Christmas light switch on, especially to see the crowd's reaction when they saw John the Giant and heard his story. It was a fantastic way to start the Christmas countdown."
