Please be aware of the upcoming week-long closure of the line between Eastleigh and Fareham, from Saturday 25 June to Sunday 3 July 2022. This will allow Network Rail (NR) engineers to deliver a package of maintenance and improvements along the line, including most importantly strengthening of a tunnel cutting outside Fareham.
For the duration of the works, the line between Eastleigh and Fareham will be closed. A Rail Replacement Bus service will run between these two stations, calling at Hedge End and Botley. There will also be a fast replacement bus service running between Eastleigh and Fareham only. These services will be timed to connect with onward train services at either end.
The timings of the replacement bus services are now available for people to plan their journeys here. The first day of the line closure will coincide with the last of three days of strike action called by the RMT union for 21st, 23rd and 25th June 2022. On this date (25th June), there will not be a Rail Replacement Bus service in place given the impact of the strike on the rest of our network, which will mean for example no trains serving Fareham for the buses to connect with.
A cutting outside a tunnel near Fareham has experienced a number of failures in recent years. In 2016, Storm Frank's extreme weather meant NR had to make temporary repairs, and it now needs a permanent fix to keep trains running safely. NR will make the most of the closure by also carrying out routine track and signalling maintenance, plus inspections on structures and drainage systems in the area. You can find more information about the closure here.
This is an important engineering project to provide a permanent fix for the cutting in question, which will help to keep trains running safely in the future. It has been planned for over a year, well in advance of any RMT union dispute being known about or strike action having been declared. What is most important for NR and SWR is delivering the package of maintenance and repair works as planned to avoid possible future disruption.
Update – Weekend Closure Cancellation
Due to the yellow weather warning in place, this weekend's closure of the eastbound carriageway between junction 9 and 11 has been cancelled.
Highways England will now only be closing the carriageway from 9.00pm on 1st October 2021 until 6.00am the next morning.
It should expected that an additional weekend closure will be required in the future, and we'll be sure to keep you updated once our plans are confirmed.
To accomodate deep reconstruction activities on the M27 between junction 9 and 11, Highways England will need to close alternate carriageways for an entire weekend.
During this time, they'll take the opportunity to undertake as many additional activities as possible.
The M27 westbound carriageway will be closed between junction 11 and 9 from 9.00pm 24th September 2021 until 6.00am 27th September 2021.
Then they will then close the M27 eastbound carriageway between junction 9 and 11 from 9.00pm 1st October 2021 until 6.00am 4th October 2021.
Locations and Approximate durations of upcoming road closures can be seen below:
Northbound closure only between M27 junction 9 and Parkway South Roundabout (Please note that Whiteley Way will remain open to southbound traffic)
Both directions will be closed on Parkway between Parkway South Roundabout and a point approximately 85 meters south east of Parkway South Roundabout
Additionally, there will be a temporary lane reduction taking place on the westbound carriageway between junction 8 and junction 9 of the M27.
To accomodate major cabling and ducting works, the junction 10 eastbound entry slip road will be closed from 9.00pm 18 February 2021 until 6.00am 23 February 2021.
The diversion will be clearly signposted, and details of the diversion route can be found below:

Due to the recent decrease in the number of vehicles travelling on the M27 due to the Covid-19 pandemic, the M27 will be temporarily reduced to two lanes between junction 11 and junction 10 on the westbound carriageway only. The reduction to two lanes will take place throughout the day from 6.00am until 8.00pm each day, from 29 January 2021 until 15 February 2021.
This will enable continuing fully imposing the Government restrictions imposed by Covid-19 and allow working safely both during the day as well as overnight when required. This arrangement will also be kept under constant review.
Gantry Installations are continuing to take place throughout the scheme between junction 4 and junction 11. We currently expect all gantry installations to be complete by the end of February 2021, and we'll be sure to provide additional closure information once confirmed.
The above activity requires overnight closures which can be found below:

We're currently making changes to the M27 junction 9 westbound exit slip road.
Due to recent adverse weather, the dates for these works have been altered. We will now be undertaking further tarmac works at this location on Friday 11 December 2020 and are currently aiming to switch the junction 9 westbound exit slip road to the new temporary layout on the evening of Saturday 12 December 2020.
The new temporary layout will now be open at 6:00am on Sunday 13 December 2020.
Hampshire County Council have informed us of night-time works starting this Thursday required for the M27 between J4 and J11 for Gantry Installations.
Each gantry should be installed within one shift, allowing our contractors to regularly move throughout the scheme installing gantries as they go. Occasionally however there may be a requirement for an additional night's work on a particular gantry installation. The gantry installation programme is currently scheduled to be completed in December 2020.
The above activity requires the following overnight closures within the borough :
All Dates may be subject to change owing to operational requirements or adverse weather conditions.
This weekend (4th - 7th September) Highways England will be installing the new North Fareham footbridge, which will be situated between junctions 10 and 11 of the M27.
The bridge installation will require a full closure of the M27 between junctions 9 and 11 from Friday 4 September at 9.00pm until Monday 7 September at 6.00am. This closure will include access off and onto the M27 at junction 10.
The bridge installation is taking place overnight, as it needs to be installed as quickly and safely as possible. There is less traffic at night, which allows Highways England to close the motorway with reduced impact for the travelling public, and they need to work through the night in order to allow them to re-open the motorway, as soon as the installation is complete.
The bridge installation may be noisy at times, and Highways England have written to local residents to inform them of this installation in advance.
The closure dates may be subject to change owing to operational requirements or adverse weather conditions. Diversion routes will be clearly signposted.
They advise road users to plan their journeys in advance by visiting the Traffic England website or by following their Twitter feed: @HighwaysSEAST
From tonight (24th August) there will be a temporary road closure of the northbound carriageway on Whiteley Way.
Night time working is essential for the construction of various elements of the scheme to reduce any impact on this already congested part of the highway network during the day.
Work will commence at Parkway South Roundabout for approximately four weeks.
A temporary road closure is also required at night for the northbound carriageway on Whiteley Way, between Junction 9 of the M27 and Parkway South Roundabout.
The closure is for the northbound carriageway only and the southbound carriageway will remain open to traffic. The closure will take place over five nights from Monday 24th August to Friday 28th August between 10pm and 5am each day.
The closure is needed to ensure the safety of road users and the workforce during drainage and ducting works.
