Fareham residents have given an overwhelming thumbs up to Council plans for a new £7m Leisure Centre with swimming pool, on the site of the old Coldeast Hospital off Barnes Lane, Sarisbury Green.
Over one hundred people attended two public exhibitions last week, with the vast majority expressing their excitement at the modern design for the new centre. Many attendees were interested in the wide range of facilities that would be on offer to residents, as well as the Council's plans to make sure the centre is easy to get to and from, when it opens in 2016.
Executive Member for Leisure and Community at Fareham Borough Council, Cllr Connie Hockley, said: "It's reassuring to know that so many people are as excited about the designs as we are. We will take into account everybody's comments from the consultation and make any changes to the designs that are necessary, before submitting a planning application later this month."
You can still view the designs at www.fareham.gov.uk or come and see them in person and ask questions at the next Western Wards Community Action Team (CAT) Meeting on Friday 7 November at the at Sarisbury Green Community Centre, 7- 8.30pm.
The new centre will be designed and built by Balfour Beatty, who built the Aquatic Centre for the 2012 London Olympics. It is due to open in 2016. Facilities will include:
As well as the leisure centre, 2 new football pitches (one junior size) will be created, a new play area and a multi-use games area for older children. The plans also contain provision of new allotments and a new cemetery. There is a large area of land on the site that supports woodlands, meadows, a pond and an orchard. This land has been taken on by the Council's Countryside Service and will be managed for nature conservation for the community to enjoy.
