The ground breaking ceremony for a sustainable housing project, to be built to Passivhaus standards, took place today at 14:30.
Six Passivhaus homes have received funding from Fareham Borough Council with assistance from the Home and Communities Agency's (HCA) 2015-2018 Affordable Homes Programme.
The affordable housing scheme project is due to begin construction this spring on Allotment Road in Sarisbury Green and will be built by Interserve, the international support services and construction group. Once these properties are completed, the two bedroom homes will be rented to citizens on the Council's housing lists.
Passivhaus is the world's leading fabric first approach to low energy buildings and is the fastest growing energy performance standard. It is widely acclaimed across the construction industry as it leads the way in helping to achieve superior energy efficiency ratings.
The core focus of the Passivhaus standard is to dramatically reduce the requirement for space heating and cooling, whilst also creating excellent indoor air quality and comfort levels.
The Passivhaus standard can be applied to many types of buildings. It is cost effective, delivers long term energy performance, reduces fuel consumption and provides health benefits for allergy sufferers and asthmatics due to its extensive filtering system.
Energy performance of the homes will be monitored for twelve months to gain a deeper understanding of the benefits of Passivhaus.
Justin Elliott, Interserve divisional director said:
"We are really excited to be appointed by Fareham Borough Council on their first Passivhaus project. With a national track record in Passivhaus construction, we will be combining our expertise with that of our local supply chain to build on our reputation for delivering innovative solutions."
