Cllr Seán Woodward, Executive Leader of Fareham Borough Council and Warsash councillors, Cllr Trevor Cartwright and Cllr Mike Ford, met with Professor Mike Wilkinson, Deputy Vice-Chancellor of Southampton Solent University at the Warsash Maritime Academy on Friday 12 June.
The visit followed the University's announcement earlier this year that a review of the facilities at the Warsash Maritime Academy was being undertaken. The visitors were able to see at first hand the size, scale and value of the world-class maritime training currently being provided.
There is much local interest around the evaluation and the three previously published options currently being explored by the University. During the discussion these were confirmed by Professor Wilkinson as either an investment in the Warsash campus so that it can continue to deliver maritime training and education on-site, or relocation and investment in new facilities at the University's East Park Terrace in Southampton and dispose of the entire site for possible development.
Alternatively a third option would be a hybrid solution where the waterfront facilities at Warsash campus are retained and invested in while the remainder of the site is disposed of for possible development and services not requiring water access relocated to new facilities at East Park Terrace.
Cllr Woodward said: "There is significant local concern about the future of the Warsash Maritime Academy. I was pleased to visit the site with local Councillors so we could appreciate the breadth of the training delivered as well as the local economic benefits of the training to Warsash. It was also an opportunity to understand the aims and ambitions of the University.
"I understand any possible changes will not take effect until 2018 at the earliest and we will engage with the University so we can reflect local issues and understand their aims and ambitions."
Professor Mike Wilkinson, Deputy Vice-Chancellor of Southampton Solent University said: "We place great value on our maritime education and training provision and we need to ensure we are able to continue the standard of excellence that enables us to consistently meet and exceed expectations for maritime education and training."
