West Street Redevelopment, Former Birks Building - Redevelopment Objectives

Vision 

• Deliver affordable units with outdoor space, whilst also providing commercial properties on West Street. 
• Provision of a wheelchair accessible unit plus all ground floor accommodation suitable for those with limited mobility. 
• A high-quality scheme meeting modern standards and expectations. 
• Sympathetic approach to design to reflect original features. 
• Significantly improved energy efficiency rating and the incorporation of greener technologies benefiting the wider environment. 
• A high standard of thermal comfort for occupants, along with improved energy costs. 

Proposal  

• Affordable housing and commercial space owned by Fareham Borough Council and designed to current space standards. 
• Approx. 23 units with a mix of 1 and 2 bedrooms, including accessible units for those with mobility needs. 
• Robust materials that age gracefully and reflect the original Foresters' Hall facade (which is unable to be retained). 
• Designed with a fabric-first approach and green energy solutions to ensure minimal running costs. 
• The final development to retain the Birk's name.
