Holly Hill Self Guided Walk

Duration: 50 mins - 1hr 20 mins.

Parking: Holly Hill Car Park, Barnes Lane.

Accessibility: Gravel paths and some steep slopes.

Comments: Map for site available, some slopes involved.

The walk

Enter the Park through the metal ivy and holly gate from the main car park. Continue straight on down a short slope to a crossroads with a large copper beech tree.

Turn right and follow this track down to the lakes. Turn right on reaching the lakes and cross a green metal bridge. Follow this path around the top of the lakes and along the opposite side, passing a picnic area and eventually the Pulhamite grotto. At the lower end of the lakes, the path crosses a metal bridge over a waterfall. (Short cut: follow the path to the left around the edge of the lakes. On reaching a picnic area, turn right uphill and this will lead back past the copper beech tree and up to the car park).

At the end of the bridge, turn right and cross over some stepping stones (to avoid the stepping stones, carry on following the lake edge and take the next right by a bench and head to the stone bridge). Turn left and cross the stone bridge. Turn right and follow the stream for some way through the woods (Winnards Park). There is a right turning for access to the River Hamble about halfway along this track. Ignore this and carry on to the viewing platform of the River Hamble.

Double back from the platform and take the right-hand fork. Continue along this path for some way, passing a picnic area on the left, then a metal field gate leading out to houses on the right. Continue until reaching a fork in the path and turn right. The path dips down and up again and at the T-junction, turn left (the easy access car park is to the right).

At the Sunken Garden and Holly Hill Mansion (private property), take the path that runs up the side and away from the garden. This leads back to the ivy and holly gate and the car park.

Travel directions

From M27 junction 9, follow signs for the A27. You will quickly reach a large roundabout with turnings for the A27. Take the turning for A27 West, heading towards Park Gate. Go straight across three roundabouts - you should now be on the section of the A27 known as Bridge Road, heading towards Southampton. Take the third left hand turning into Barnes Lane and follow this road until you reach traffic lights. For the main car park for Holly Hill, take the right hand turn just past this crossing.

Nearest Refreshments

The Bold Forester, Bridge Road (A27); From Barnes Lane, turn right onto the A27. It is on the left hand side of the road.
