Duration: 1 hr 15 mins - 1hr 45 mins.
Parking: Very limited on Nyewood Avenue, or Skew Road to the north of the route.
Accessibility: Stiles and kissing gates involved. Hilly in places.
Comments: Watch your footing for rabbit holes on the common area.
From Nyewood Avenue, head back towards Hill Road. Turn right and follow the pavement down slope until, just past the bend you will see the beginning of a footpath on the left side of the road. Cross carefully and take this footpath, which will lead you up the hill. Continue on this path, eventually curving round to the right, until it opens out onto grassland.
Take the path straight ahead, through thorn bushes on both sides then follow it up slope to lead you to a gate for the path which leads over the motorway. Cross the motorway and follow the path until you reach a metal kissing gate.
Take the path to the right which will eventually turn to the left and head up the hill. Continue up the hill until you reach the overgrown bushes which mark the northern boundary of the site.
Turn left and follow the top path right the way along the Common. At the far end you will go over a small dip and past a cattle holding pen. In front of this you will see a wooden kissing gate (Short cut: Turn left into Skew Road and carefully follow this lane down, over the motorway, until you see the Nyewood Avenue turning on your right) - go through this and turn right into Skew Road. Continue carefully up Skew Road, keeping to the grass verges where possible until you reach a crossroads.
Head carefully straight over and follow this lane down slope until you reach a turning to the right. Opposite this turning, on the left hand side of the lane you are on, you will see a temporary right of way sign. Head left across the field to the corner of the woods, then follow the boundaries of the wood and research establishment westwards.
As you reach the end of the research establishment's high fence you will see a stile into the next field. Go over this stile and follow the route diagonally across the field to the stile on the opposite side. You should now be right by Nelson's Monument. Go over the stile and take a left into Nelson Lane. Follow this road down to the crossroads, where you will be heading straight ahead, down slope!
Follow this lane carefully until it meets with Skew Road. Here, turn right and head down the hill, back over the motorway, until you see the Nyewood Avenue turning on your right.
From M27 junction 11, take the left hand lane of the route to Fareham A27, which will lead you down to a roundabout. Turn left, under a railway bridge, onto A27 East. Continue on this road, straight on at the first two roundabouts, and a little to the left at the third. You should still be on the A27 and passing Portchester Village on your right. At the next roundabout turn left into Station Road, and follow this road up the hill where it will merge with Hill Road. Go under the railway bridge then take the fourth left hand turn, just past the bend. You should be in Nyewood Avenue. Park along this road.
Southwick Village: From Nyewood Avenue, head left up Hill Road. After crossing the motorway follow Skew Road round to the right and continue on this road until you reach the crossroads. Go straight over at the crossroads, then carefully follow the lane to the right down slope and round some bends until you reach a roundabout. At this roundabout go straight across then take the left hand turning into Southwick Village. Here you will find a number of pleasant pubs to choose from.
