Changes in your circumstances
If your circumstances change it may affect the amount of help you get towards your rent or Council Tax. You must tell us about any changes straightaway. Below is a list of examples to help you know what change of circumstances could affect your entitlement. However, this list does not cover every change so you must inform us of every change that happens to you or anyone in your household. Failure to tell us could mean that you are overpaid benefit and this can be recovered from you.
Some of the changes that could affect your Housing Benefit and Council Tax Support are:
- You move house (please note if you're below state pension age and move out of supported, sheltered or temporary housing, your Housing Benefit will end. You can apply for Universal Credit instead.)
- Someone else moves in to or out of your house, including children, a partner or lodger
- You or someone in your household changes job
- You or someone in your household stops or starts work, education, training or an apprenticeship
- You or someone in your household stops receiving Universal Credit (do not assume that the Department for Works and Pensions will always tell us)
- Your rent increases or decreases
- Your household income changes
- Changes to your or your partner's savings,investments or property
- Changes to the benefits you or anyone else in your household gets
- Changes to your personal or workplace pension
- Someone in your household becomes a student, leaves school or gets a job
- You have a baby
- Changes to your immigration status, if you are not a British citizen
- Your child turning 18
- Going into hospital
- Going abroad for any length of time
- Anything you have previously told us about changes
