Press Release

Council tax increase in Fareham

27 February 2019

Council tax to rise in Fareham for 2019/2020

Fareham Borough Council will increase its part of the Council Tax by £5 for a Band D property to £160.22 annually - 44p per day from 1st April 2019.

This is only the fourth increase in ten years against a background in Government cuts that has seen the Council’s grant fall from £6.2m in 2009/10 to £1.9m in 2019/20.

In previous years the Council has been able to freeze Fareham's part of Council Tax through careful financial management and by improving efficiency across service areas. However, an increase is now necessary, so residents can continue to receive the same high level of service.

Fareham Borough Council retains less than 10 per cent of the charges collected with the remainder going to Hampshire County Council, the Police Commissioner and the Fire Authority. Fareham currently has the fifth lowest Band D Council Tax for a borough or district council nationwide out of more than 200 Councils.

The decision was implemented following a consultation with residents living in the Fareham Borough.

Executive Leader of Fareham Borough Council, Cllr Seán Woodward said: “The Council has had no option but to increase Council Tax charges due to the reduction in Government funding.

“It is a minor increase but is necessary to continue to give residents the high level of service they expect from the Council. Fareham still has one of the lowest borough council tax rates in the country.”
