Press Release

Have your say on play equipment at Daedalus Park

7 June 2019

New look Daedalus Common for summer 2020

A landmark sculpture and new play equipment will be built at Daedalus Common but, before going ahead, residents are being asked to vote for their favourite designs.

The sculpture, called a Gate Guardian, will stand next to the Peel Common roundabout and be visible from the road. It is being paid for using developer contributions from National Grid who have agreed to fund a package of community facilities at Daedalus that includes a new sculpture.

The new children’s play area equipment will follow an aviation theme to reflect the location next to Solent Airport. Both the Gate Guardian and play area will be in place on Daedalus Common by Summer 2020.

Fareham Borough Council commissioned the landmark sculpture and have compiled a shortlist of five designs that reflect the history and legacy of Daedalus.  It is now asking residents to help by voting for their favourite.

Voting boxes for the Gate Guardian will also be at a number of schools and community centres in the local area. Visitors to the D-Day 75 event will be among the first to see the new designs and vote for their favourite.

Residents are also being asked to choose from a selection of aviation themed play equipment for the area which is next to Solent Airport, where families can see planes take off and land whilst they play.

Leader of Fareham Borough Council, Cllr Seán Woodward, said: “We are delighted to confirm these exciting new additions to Daedalus Common and would ask residents to help us choose between the designs by voting for their preferred options.

"Both the new landmark sculpture and the play area will be great new attractions at Daedalus, providing something of which we hope the whole community will be proud.”

The consultation for both the play equipment and landmark sculpture will be open from Friday 7 June to 11:59pm on Monday 8 July.  Please visit  www.fareham.gov.uk/haveyoursay to choose your favourite play equipment and/or cast your vote for the new landmark sculpture.
