Press Release

7 January 2020

Fareham Councillor resigns from Liberal Democrats

Portchester East Councillor, Shaun Cunningham, resigned from the Liberal Democrats on Monday 6 January.

He will serve as an independent councillor with immediate effect.

The political balance of the Council is now as follows:

Conservative                        24        77.42%

Liberal Democrat                   4        12.9%

Independent                          2         6.45%

UKIP                                     1         3.23%

Whilst there is a UKIP councillor a group cannot be formed by a single member and so for the purposes of the calculations of political proportionality for committee allocations, the UKIP councillor will be treated as an independent member.

The seats on committees previously held by Cllr Cunningham will remain with the Liberal Democrats until the committee allocations are recalculated and re-allocated at the next Council meeting on Friday 21 February.

Cllr Cunningham’s term of office is 5 May 2016 – 7 May 2020.
