Press Release

Residents urged to share memories and photographs of VE Day 1945

Residents who have photographs and memories of VE Day 75 years ago are being urged to send them into Fareham Borough Council to be shared ahead of the anniversary at the end of this week

The Council also wants to see photographs of activities from this year’s 75th anniversary, especially where residents have used the “Stay At Home Street Party Pack” it published last week.

The Council is keen to hear from anyone who remembers street parties and wider celebrations that marked the end of hostilities in Europe at the end of the Second World War.

Fareham has very close connections with the armed forces and there were widespread celebrations in the area when it was announced that the German forces had surrendered on 8 May 1945.

The Council also wants to see families and residents marking the anniversary this year with their own bunting designs, baking from war-time recipes or singing along to We’ll Meet Again.

Executive Leader of Fareham Borough Council, Councillor Sean Woodward, said: “Many people across the Borough will have their own memories of VE Day, or their descendants will have photographs and other information about VE Day.

“Where possible we would like people to scan in those photographs and send them to us by email so we can share them more widely on our social media channels and help show the wider population what VE Day meant for Fareham.

“VE Day was a momentous date in our country’s history and we had been looking forward to marking the 75th anniversary this week with lots of events before the Coronavirus pandemic put an end to those.

“We have already provided a stay at home street party pack for people to mark the anniversary later this week, and we would like to share photos of people marking the 75th anniversary with their own bunting designs, baking attempts and other activities.”

If you have any photographs, memories or other documents that you would like to share widely through the Council’s social media channels then please scan them and send to publicity@fareham.gov.uk.
