Council working with Health and Safety Executive to ensure businesses are COVID-secure

Fareham Borough Council is working with the Health and Safety Executive (HSE) to help support businesses across the Borough by ensuring they have the correct COVID-secure measures in place.

Being COVID-secure means that businesses need to put adjustments in place to manage the risk from coronavirus and help protect employees and the general public. HSE will be using trained and approved partners to talk to and visit local businesses in Fareham to understand how they are managing the risks in line with their specific business activity.

During these checks, HSE can provide specific advice and guidance on how to manage risk and protect workers, customers and visitors. Common issues include failing to provide arrangements for monitoring, supervising and maintaining social distancing, and failing to introduce an adequate cleaning regime particularly at busy times of the day.

If businesses are unable to comply with COVID-secure measures, then HSE will refer them to the Council to take a range of actions. This could be from providing additional support to business owners to issuing enforcement notices or stopping certain work practices until they are made safe.

Ian Rickman, Head of Environmental Health at Fareham Borough Council commented: “Becoming COVID-secure needs to be the main priority for all businesses in Fareham. It is not only a legal duty for businesses but will protect their workers and their customers from harm. While HSE and the Council are here to provide advice and guidance on the adjustments which may need to be made, we also advise employers to work with their staff when implementing changes, to help increase confidence with workers, customers and the local community.”
