Press Release

22 February 2022

Herbicide treatment across Borough

Local residents are advised that Fareham Borough Council will commence its annual herbicide treatment across the Borough from the 1 March.

The Council has used a product called Nomix Dual, which contains glyphosate, for many years to reduce unwanted vegetation, specifically in locations where there are obstacles to using traditional machinery. These sites are sprayed once a year in dry weather conditions to ensure maximum effectiveness.

Residents are reassured that the Chemical Regulation Division (CRD), responsible for all pesticide products in the UK, have analysed all available information and deemed the product safe to use and with very little risk to the environment or animals.

While the Council is not able to provide a schedule of where they will be spraying in advance, due to a variety of factors such as weather conditions, daily updates will be posted on the Council’s website: https://www.fareham.gov.uk/clean_and_tidy/grounds_maintenance/intro.aspx

The team will also be wearing high visibility waistcoats indicating ‘Herbicide Spraying’ while the work is in progress.

Executive Member for Streetscene at Fareham Borough Council, Councillor Ian Bastable, said: “We work throughout the year to make the Borough look its best and ensure that areas do not become overrun with unwanted vegetation. This is necessary work to allow residents to continue to use these areas unhindered.

“Following feedback from residents, we will publish details of when and where we will be spraying herbicides going forward and ensure that our operatives are clearly visible.”
