Green Flag awards retained by Fareham Parks

Fareham Borough Council is delighted to announce that two of its open spaces have once again retained the prestigious Green Flag Awards.

Holly Hill Woodland Park, already rated number one in the Nature and Wildlife Areas in Hampshire on Trip Advisor, has now received the Green Flag recognition for the 15th year in a row. The Sensory Garden in Fareham town centre can now boast a run of 13 successive years of receiving the honour. They are recognised as two of the best parks in the country, with around 2,000 sites in the UK reaching the criteria to receive the award.

The purpose of the Green Flag Award scheme is to ensure that everybody has access to green spaces and that these spaces are managed to meet the needs of the community they serve. Through recognising and rewarding well-managed parks and green spaces, they set the benchmark for the management of recreational outdoor spaces across the United Kingdom and around the world.

Sites are appraised by experienced judges, who alternate each year between a full desk and site assessment, or an unannounced ‘Mystery Shop’ assessment. They judge the parks using eight criteria:

Executive Member for Streetscene at Fareham Borough Council, Councillor Ian Bastable, said:

“We’re extremely proud of Fareham’s well-managed open spaces, so we’re delighted to receive this award yet again for two of the best parks in our Borough. It could not be achieved without the year-round commitment of Council staff and volunteers, who work hard to maintain the high standard of these beautiful areas. Congratulations and well done to all involved.”
