Fareham Mourns Queen Elizabeth II

The Mayor, Councillors and Officers of Fareham Borough Council would like to express their deep sadness following the recent announcement of the death of the United Kingdom’s longest serving monarch, Queen Elizabeth II, at the age of 96.  Queen Elizabeth II’s reign of 70 years led the country through many difficult times with dignity, grace and determination.

As a mark of respect, the Union Flag will be flown at half-mast in accordance with statutory protocol.  Flowers may be placed under the flag outside the Civic Offices and will be removed the day after the funeral. Any flowers placed elsewhere will be relocated to the grassed area opposite the Civic Offices.

A book of condolence has been opened in the Reception area of Fareham Borough Council and will be available to the public from Monday to Friday until the day following the funeral.  Further books of condolence will be available at Lockswood Library, Portchester Library and Stubbington Library.

The Proclamation will be made at St James’ Palace and then read by the High Sheriff in Winchester on Sunday 11 September 2022 at 1pm.  An hour later, at 2pm it will be read in Fareham town centre by the Mayor of Fareham, Cllr Mike Ford, with Deputy Lieutenant Mrs Joan Ferrer, the Leader of the Council and the Deputy Chief Executive present.  The public are most welcome to attend.

The Bygone Fareham event scheduled for this Saturday will be cancelled as a mark of respect.

Mayor of Fareham, Councillor Mike Ford said: “We are all greatly saddened by the loss of HM Queen Elizabeth II and would like to extend our deepest condolences to the Royal Family, who remain in our thoughts and prayers at this very sad time.”

Executive Leader of Fareham Borough Council, Cllr Seán Woodward: “I pay tribute to Queen Elizabeth II, the longest serving monarch ever of the United Kingdom.  Her commitment to duty for her entire reign is beyond compare.  She was loved and respected and will be mourned deeply in Fareham and worldwide.  She has been a constant in the lives of almost every living soul on Earth and imagining her being no more is impossible.  May she find eternal rest now her labours are over.”

Details of the state funeral will be announced once details are confirmed.
