Press Release

2 December 2022

Council upgrades phone payment system for added security

Fareham Borough Council is pleased to announce that it is changing the way that it takes card payments over the telephone to increase security for residents.

While Direct Debit is the most cost-effective and efficient way to make payment, some Fareham residents prefer to pay for their services over the phone. The Council is therefore upgrading to a more modern and secure payment system to comply with the Payment Card Industry Data Security Standards (PCI DSS).

From 7 December, when a customer contacts the Civic Offices to pay for services, they will be greeted by one of the friendly team as usual. When the time comes to take payment, the customer will be transferred to a secure, automated payment system to enter their card details. Once their payment has been accepted, they will be given an authorisation code and the call will end.  The customer will then be sent a payment receipt as confirmation, either by email or post depending on their preference.

If the customer experiences any issues with the automated service, or if their payment is declined, they can call the Civic Offices back and try again.

Executive Leader of Fareham Borough Council, Cllr Seán Woodward, said:

“Keeping residents’ personal data safe is of upmost importance to us, so we are very pleased to be able to make use of more modern technology and upgrade our telephone payment system to make it even more secure. Those who choose to pay for their services by telephone will still be greeted by a Council Officer as always, but the automated system will take their card details to help keep them as secure as possible.”

All the Council’s other payment channels remain unchanged, and you can find all the details on how to pay on the Council website: www.fareham.gov.uk/pay_for_it.
