Communications Boards

30 January 2023

Communication boards installed at Fareham play areas

As part of Fareham Borough Council’s programme of play area improvements, communication boards have been installed at three of its play areas. These boards feature colourful pictures so children who are unable to talk are still able to communicate with their friends and family while at the play area.

The communication boards have been installed at Kenwood Road, Kites Croft Close and Blackbrook Park play areas and were a suggestion made by local resident Hollie Shilling, whose son, Alfie, has autism.

The idea was well received by both the Council and the contractor, Kompan, which delivered the latest play area improvements at these locations towards the end of last year. These boards complement the existing range of inclusive play equipment across the Borough, including the recently installed wheelchair swing at Holly Hill, high back swing seats, sensory panels, trampoline, roundabouts and a range of other wheelchair accessible play equipment.

Executive Member for Leisure and Community at Fareham Borough Council, Councillor Sue Walker said: “This was such a good idea from Hollie, as it’s not something we have anywhere else in the Borough. I am committed to making our play areas as inclusive as possible, so these communication boards will certainly be considered as part of our next programme of play area improvements from 2023-2028. I welcome any ideas from residents on how to make further improvements going forward.”

Hollie Shilling, added: “I am absolutely delighted that Fareham Borough Council has been able to create these communication boards. It means so much to us that Alfie will have the opportunity to communicate with other children and develop his communication skills. I am really hopeful that they will benefit so many other children and families too.”
