Green Flag awards retained by Fareham Parks

Fareham Borough Council is delighted to announce that two of its open spaces have once again retained the prestigious Green Flag Awards.

Holly Hill Woodland Park has now received the Green Flag recognition for the 16th year in a row and the Sensory Garden in Fareham town centre can now boast a run of 14 successive years of receiving the honour. They are recognised as two of the best parks in the country, with only around 2,000 sites across 15 countries receiving the award.

The purpose of the Green Flag Award scheme is to ensure that everybody has access to quality green spaces and that these spaces are managed to meet the needs of the community they serve. Through recognising and rewarding well-managed parks and green spaces, they set the benchmark for the management of recreational outdoor spaces across the United Kingdom and around the world.

Sites are appraised by trained parks and green space professionals, who judge the parks using eight criteria:

  1. A welcoming place
  2. Healthy, safe and secure
  3. Well maintained and clean
  4. Environmental management
  5. Biodiversity, landscape and heritage
  6. Community involvement
  7. Marketing and communication
  8. Management

Executive Member for Streetscene at Fareham Borough Council, Councillor Ian Bastable, said: “We’re extremely proud of Fareham’s open spaces and receiving this international quality mark for parks and green spaces yet again is testament to the hard work and dedication of the team that care for them.  It could not be achieved without the year-round commitment of Council staff and volunteers, who work so hard to maintain these beautiful areas.”
