Council invites residents to help choose a name for new leisure and community facilities

The first steps in a programme to transform the Fareham North West community centre and leisure facilities adjacent to Henry Cort Drive get underway early next week as the Council seeks help in finding the right name for the venture.  The Council is inviting people to vote for their favourite of three names:

  1. Henry Cort Open Space – in recognition of the geographic area adjacent to the school
  2. Fareham Park – to reflect the new ward name of the area which comes into effect for next year’s local elections (currently this is Fareham North- West)
  3. Hillson Park – to reflect the location

Next week the voting station will be placed at Fareham North-West Community Centre and remain there until the end of the year to ensure everyone has an opportunity to cast their vote.  There will also be an opportunity to vote online via the Council’s Facebook consultation page ‘Let’s Talk Fareham’ later in the month.

Cllr Sue Walker, Executive Member for Leisure and Community, said: ‘This really is an exciting project and will have a positive impact for the whole community.  Getting the name right for something of this magnitude is really important so I do hope everyone, particularly those likely to use the new facilities, will take the time to choose the name they prefer.’

Phase one of the programme will be to relocate and enhance the play and recreational facilities adjacent to the existing community centre to the edge of the Recreation Ground to the southern side of Henry Cort Drive.

Phase two includes a new, energy-efficient, larger and fit-for-purpose community centre; accessible toilets to service the pitches; a replacement pétanque court and car parking for the new leisure and community facilities.

Recognising the importance of ensuring the Council is able to provide new facilities that meet the needs of the local community, the Council has appointed consultants Lifschutz Davidson Sandilands to meet with group and community leaders to understand their views and use them to inform and develop plans for the building in a bit more detail.  These plans will form a major part of a public exhibition giving the whole community an opportunity to comment on them and ensure that everyone’s needs have been considered.

Once phase two is complete, the Council would allocate the land that has been vacated to provide up to 55 much-needed affordable new homes.

Further information about the scheme is on the Council’s website: Fareham North West.
