Press Release

23 August 2024

Ukrainian Independence Day art competition

As part of its commitment to make its Ukrainian guests feel more integrated into the community, Fareham Borough Council has been running a ‘Ukrainian Independence Day Art Competition’.

Fareham currently has 38 families from Ukraine, who fled their country due to the ongoing war with Russia, now living with host families around the Borough. To mark Ukraine’s Independence Day on 24 August, they have been invited to produce some artwork under the theme of ‘My Home’.

The entries of the art competition will be judged on 27 August at the Crafty Makery in Fareham Shopping Centre, by the Mayor of Fareham, Cllr Pal Hayre, alongside the Local Children's Partnership Chair, Biddy Mayo.

The winner of both the adult and child categories will receive a £100.00 shopping voucher and the Council will publish the winners on its social media channels.

There will also be a range of other activities on the day including face painting and traditional Ukrainian wooden doll making for anyone to come along and join in.

Executive Member for Housing at Fareham Borough Council, Cllr Fred Birkett said: “I am immensely proud of the work that has been put in to making our Ukrainian guests feel at home here in Fareham. I am really looking forward to seeing all the artwork submitted for this competition under the ‘My Home’ theme and encourage Fareham residents to come along and have a look.”

The Council arranges a number of social activities for Ukrainian guests throughout the year such as coffee mornings and organised bike rides. Residents and guests are encouraged to find out more at: www.fareham.gov.uk/refugeesupport
