Live Longer Better in Fareham

Fareham Borough Council has been awarded grant funding by Hampshire County Council, to launch physical activity sessions for older people across the Borough, starting in June.

The funding from the ‘Live Longer Better’ programme, has enabled the Council to team up with Everyone Active to offer those aged over 55 the chance to experience a range of physical activity sessions in community locations across the Borough.

Once registered, residents can enjoy four weeks of free classes, for a limited time only, and continue at £5 per session thereafter. Classes have been arranged to take place in the heart of communities that are currently lacking these opportunities, to make them as accessible as possible.

Classes on offer from Wednesday 4 June are:

To sign up, please contact Everyone Active on 01329 233652, or by visiting Holly Hill or Fareham Leisure Centres.

The Live Longer Better programme is designed to improve healthy life expectancies and quality of life for older people. Physical activity for older people is vitally important as being more active can:

The Council has also used the Live Longer Better funding to provide two of its Sheltered Housing Officers with professional training to deliver seated exercise classes to its sheltered housing residents across Fareham. Session details will be advertised within each sheltered housing scheme

Executive Member for Leisure and Community at Fareham Borough Council, Cllr Connie Hockley said: “I am delighted that we have received this Live Longer Better funding to offer older people in Fareham the opportunity to try new things and get more active. Around 20 minutes of physical activity is recommended each day, but any amount of exercise is better than nothing, and these community classes are a great place to start. Delivered by Everyone Active, they are sure to be great fun, a good way to socialise and try a new activity in a safe space. I encourage older people in the community to try them as part of this free trial and take the first step in an ongoing fitness journey.”

Ryan Grant, contract manager at Everyone Active, added: “Maintaining physical activity and keeping socially active is vitally important for older people in the local community. We are incredibly proud to be supporting the Live Longer Better programme, which aims to inspire over 55s to try new activities, helping people of all abilities discover the different ways they can enjoy exercise.”
