Press Release

2 June 2025

Council shines a light on volunteering

Fareham Borough Council is delighted to highlight the volunteering opportunities and the activities of local volunteers in Fareham during Volunteer’s Week, which runs from 2 to 8 June.

Volunteering has been identified as contributing to a feeling of wellbeing and social connectedness, improving quality of life whilst helping others. During Volunteer’s Week, the Council will be communicating, via social media, information and testimonials from existing volunteers highlighting the work they do and the positive benefits that volunteering brings for them and the wider community.

Fareham is fortunate that its voluntary and community sector comprises a wide range of organisations, charities and individual volunteers whose valued services and support are provided to all ages of the community.

Included in these is Community First Wessex, which is funded by the Council to provide support in promoting volunteering opportunities for local groups and to help prospective volunteers find positions that will be inspiring for them. It also holds a Community Showcase on the Council’s behalf every year, celebrating the community and voluntary sector in the borough and enabling groups to talk to members of the public about the fabulous work they do and their volunteering opportunities. This year’s Showcase takes place in West Street, Fareham on 5 July, from 10am until 4pm.

Residents who are interested in volunteering can also search for opportunities using Volunteer First, a free brokerage service that matches potential volunteers with suitable openings in the local community. Their website can be found here: https://volunteerfirst.co.uk/

In addition, the Council has occasional volunteer opportunities, giving local people the chance to be an integral part of community events. Enthusiastic volunteers are currently being sought to assist with Fareham’s Big Weekend, which takes place on Saturday 12 July and Sunday 13 July. Specifically, volunteer marshals are needed to help visitors navigate across the town and explore all of the different activity areas at this fantastic event. Interested people can contact the Leisure and Community Team directly by emailing leisure@fareham.gov.uk.

Executive Member for Leisure and Community at Fareham Borough Council, Cllr Connie Hockley, said:

“We are proud to support the many wonderful charities and voluntary organisations that work so hard to provide their important services to local people in the borough. The benefits of getting involved cannot be underestimated, so I would urge anyone thinking of volunteering to take the plunge and look for local opportunities available to them.”

Further information about volunteering, accessing funding, community support and more can be found at the Council’s website: https://www.fareham.gov.uk/voluntaryservices.
