Council successful in bid to decarbonise the heating of the depot

Fareham Borough Council has been awarded £450,000 to assist in a project to decarbonise its depot site, following a successful bid for funding under the Public Sector Decarbonisation Scheme.

Administered by Salix Finance, the grant has been allocated as part of funding from the Department for Energy Security and Net Zero to assist in low carbon heating projects and will enable the Council to make energy-saving improvements to future proof its depot.

The depot, located in Wallington, is home to 180 staff. This is where services such as Streetscene, Waste and Recycling, Responsive Repairs, and the Building Control Partnership are based. It is also home to all the Council’s service vehicles, such as road sweepers, waste collection vehicles and mowers, so is a vital Council site.

The Council put forward a bid for funding to replace:

Further improvements, funded by the Council will include:

Fareham Borough Council has committed to becoming carbon neutral across all its buildings and services by 2030.These measures will end the use of gas at the Depot.  It is estimated that they will reduce the site’s carbon emissions by around 62.8 tonnes, which accounts for 16% of the Council’s overall emissions from gas use.

Plans for the infrastructure improvements needed to enable the carbon reduction measures at the Depot, alongside improvements to the working conditions there, will be presented to the Council’s Executive in the Autumn.

Executive Member for Planning and Development, Cllr Malcolm Daniells, said. “I am delighted that the Council has been awarded this significant injection of funding to reduce the carbon footprint of our depot. Reducing the Council’s carbon emissions is a high priority, and this funding is another step forward in meeting our carbon neutral target as set out in the Council’s Climate Change Action Plan.”

Director of public sector decarbonisation for Salix Ian Rodger said: “We are pleased to support Fareham Borough Council in its journey to become carbon neutral by 2030. The UK has ambitious net zero targets, and we all have a lot of work to do. Every day at Salix we are working with organisations to meet these goals and reduce our overall emissions. We have a common mission; to save the planet.”
