Council warns of possible delays to bin collections ahead of M27 road closure

Fareham Borough Council is asking residents to put their bins out the night before their scheduled collection days and to leave them out until they are collected, even if it’s later than usual, as part of its planning ahead of the M27 closure on 24 December.

Traffic disruption is expected across the Borough, so waste collection crews may start earlier to get ahead, or arrive later than expected.  The collection date should remain the same.

The Council is also expecting some impact on its emergency call-out service as congestion on the roads may impact response times.

Executive Leader of Fareham Borough Council, Cllr Simon Martin, said: “The M27 closure will enable vital infrastructure for Welborne Garden Village and, ultimately, improve motorway access for everyone. This is a significant engineering project being delivered by VolkerFitzpatrick on behalf of Hampshire Highways, and teams will work round the clock to finish as quickly as possible. Some disruption is inevitable, so thank you for your patience – especially with bin collections – and have a very happy Christmas and New Year.”

The M27 will close from 8pm on 24 December 2025 to 4am on Sunday 4 January 2026.  A signed diversion will be in place via the A27, which is mostly dual carriageway, but delays are expected – particularly between 10am and 4pm when traffic will be busiest.
