Press Release

Winter highway tree planting underway in Fareham

Fareham Borough Council is pleased to announce that a programme of street tree planting is currently taking place throughout the borough.

The Council is working in partnership with Hampshire County Council in this initiative, which is being led by their Highways Arboriculture Team. The programme supports the County Council’s Climate Change Strategy which is focused on achieving net-zero carbon by 2050, building resilience to a 2°C temperature rise, and creating cleaner air and more liveable streets.

Fareham is fortunate to have received over a quarter of Hampshire County Council’s tree planting allocation for the winter planting season, totalling over 500 trees. The programme commenced in October and is scheduled to be completed in March.

Areas identified as experiencing air pollution and a higher population density have been prioritised to receive most of tree planting. These trees will make Fareham’s streets greener and more welcoming, creating spaces that are better both for people and wildlife.

Executive Member for Streetscene at Fareham Borough Council, Councillor Ian Bastable, said:

“We’re delighted to see so many new trees being planted across Fareham this winter. Not only will they make our streets greener and more attractive, but they’ll also help improve air quality and support local wildlife. This is an important step towards creating a healthier, more sustainable borough for everyone.”

Tree planting is a key project set out in Priority Two of the Council’s Corporate Strategy: Respond to climate change and protect the environment.
