Active Travel
Fareham Borough Council is working to bring new life to Fareham Town Centre, making it a vibrant place for shopping, leisure, culture and community activities. As part of these exciting plans, funding has been secured to encourage more people to walk and travel actively into the town centre.
The Active Travel Project is all about making it easier, safer and more enjoyable for people to walk into town. This includes understanding what currently puts people off walking, identifying areas for improvement, and encouraging positive changes in everyday travel habits. By doing this, the project also aims to improve health and wellbeing across the community and help reduce health inequalities.
Ethos Consultants have been appointed to deliver the first stages of the Active Travel Project, beginning in June 2025. Their work will focus on understanding how people currently travel into Fareham Town Centre and what changes could make walking a more attractive option.
During this initial phase, Ethos will:
- Engage with the public and local groups to hear directly about people's experiences, challenges and ideas
- Carry out surveys to gather wider feedback on what encourages or discourages walking
- Review existing routes and wayfinding, including signage, lighting and accessibility, to identify gaps and opportunities for improvement
- Assess safety and accessibility, particularly for groups who may face additional barriers
- Produce a detailed report setting out key findings and practical recommendations
This research and engagement will provide a strong evidence base, helping shape improvements that make walking into Fareham Town Centre easier, safer and more appealing for everyone.
