Fareham Masterplan
Redefining Fareham Town Centre
Over the past decade, changing shopping habits have reshaped Fareham Town Centre. Rising vacancies have weakened its appeal and left the town feeling fragmented. Years of shifting shopping habits have left parts of the centre underused and disconnected.
In 2023, Fareham Borough Council took ownership of the shopping centre to take direct control of its future and unlock long-term prosperity for the town.
Retail will always play a role, but thriving town centres now depend on more. They're about places to live, meet, eat and enjoy. By reducing and reimagining retail space, we can reconnect the town, create welcoming public spaces, deliver new homes, and attract leisure and hospitality that drives footfall all day and into the night.
This means rethinking and repurposing retail space. Redeveloping parts of the centre creates an opportunity to reconnect the town, introduce lively new public spaces, deliver new homes, and attract leisure, hospitality and commercial uses that bring Fareham to life.
To shape this, Fareham Borough Council have created a Masterplan that will guide the transformation of this area. This is a living document that will continue to be developed, nothing is set in stone!
The Emerging Masterplan
A set of guiding principles underpin the masterplan design:
- Demolition of part of Fareham Shopping Centre to 'right-size' the retail offer.
- Retain key services within the town centre.
- Improved north-south connectivity and walk-ability between West Street, and Fareham Live and Civic Gardens.
- Strengthen the role of the Civic Gardens as an important green space in the town centre.
- Strengthen Fareham's character and identity with development that revitalises and transforms the town centre.
