Information for Pensioners

For people of pension age, the rules for the scheme are set by Central Government, not by the local authority. If you already claim pension age Council Tax Support, your entitlement will continue to be assessed under the same rules from 1 Apr 2026. We consider you of pension age if you have reached the qualifying age for state pension credit and if you have a partner they do not receive Income related Employment Support Allowance or Universal Credit.

How to claim

You will need to contact the office if you wish to claim Council Tax Support either emailing us via benefits@fareham.gov.uk or via telephone on 01329 824646. Please outline that you wish to claim help towards your Council Tax and we will contact you to assist you with the claiming process. You will need to complete an application form and supply us with sufficient supporting evidence about your household, income and capital in order for us to assess you for any entitlement.

Please note if you are a mixed aged couple where one of you has reached State Retirement age and one of you receives universal credit you count as a working age household for Council Tax Support and should refer to our Information for Working Age help page.

Hardship

If you are receving Council Tax Support but are still struggling to afford your Council Tax bill, it may be possible we can offer additional assistance via our Hardship Fund.

Exceptional Hardship Payments are designed as a short-term help only. All applicants will be expected to engage with the Council and undertake an application process. You can contact us to discuss your sitation on benefits@fareham.gov.uk or via 01329 824646
