Council Tax Reduction for Disabled Residents
If you are disabled, or if a disabled person lives with you, the person responsible for paying Council Tax may be entitled to a reduction. The disabled person may be an adult or a child.
How the Reduction Works
• The reduction is applied by charging Council Tax at the next band down from the one shown on your bill.
Example: If your property is in Band D, you will pay the Band C rate.
• If your property is already in Band A (the lowest band), you may receive a 16.5% discount on your Council Tax bill.
If you want to see the effect this would have, see Current Council Tax Bands and Charges.
Who Qualifies?
You may be entitled to a reduction if your home has one or more of the following features, which are:
• Essential for meeting the needs of the disabled person, and
• Of major importance to their well-being:
• A room (other than a bathroom, kitchen, or toilet) used predominantly by the disabled person
• A second bathroom or kitchen
• Extra space inside the property to allow wheelchair use, and a wheelchair is used indoors
Who Does NOT Qualify?
You will not be entitled to this reduction if:
• The adaptations or features are minor or for convenience rather than essential needs
• The disabled person does not live permanently at the property
• The property does not meet the specific criteria listed above
• The disabled person's needs can be met without the listed adaptations
