Press Release

1 March 2022

No more rubbish excuses!

Fareham is an area of unique beauty with many beach, countryside and recreation public spaces, so it is important to keep it looking its best. That is why Fareham Borough Council is pleased to announce the launch of a new anti-littering campaign to encourage people to dispose of their litter responsibly.

The theme of the campaign is ‘No More Rubbish Excuses’, and it is designed to help highlight and tackle some of the main issues experienced around the Borough. These include:

To offer Fareham residents an additional incentive to dispose of litter in the appropriate way, the Council has teamed up with Litter Lotto. This scheme offers residents the chance to win on-the-spot cash prizes as well as a £10,000 jackpot, simply by throwing their litter away.

To take part, residents are encouraged to download the Litter Lotto app using the QR code displayed on litter bins around the Borough. Then upload a picture showing litter being placed in in a litter bin for the chance to win.

Executive Member for Streetscene at Fareham Borough Council, Councillor Ian Bastable, said: “In 2020 an astonishing 686 tonnes of waste was collected from our litter bins and through litter picking on streets, parks, seafronts and open spaces. To put that into perspective that’s the same weight as 98 elephants or 381 average cars! The total cost of the removal of litter and fly tipping from our Borough in the last financial year was over a million pounds.

“While we encourage people to get out into our parks and open spaces, I would like to urge residents to take responsibility for our local beauty spots. Litter does significant damage to local wildlife and the natural environment. Please, if you can’t find a bin or the bin is full, take your litter home.”
