Council announces further commemorative tree planting initiative

Fareham Borough Council is pleased to announce that all the trees, available to sponsor as part of the Council’s tribute to Her Majesty The Queen’s Platinum Jubilee, have now sold out.

Today the first of 100 trees was planted at ‘The Queen’s Copse’ site at Abbey Meadows in Titchfield by the Mayor of Fareham, Cllr Mrs Pamela Bryant alongside Executive Leader of Fareham Borough Council, Cllr Seán Woodward.  The planting was scheduled a week ahead of the nationwide civic tree planting initiative as a mark of respect.

Due to the popularity and high demand for this scheme the Council is delighted to announce that a second area has been identified to provide even more residents, community groups, organisations, clubs and businesses with the opportunity to sponsor a commemorative tree.

A further 80 trees will be made available in ‘The Platinum Copse’ which will be situated in the south of the Abbey Meadows site. This site will provide a second area of protected wildlife habitat to encourage biodiversity.  More information about each variety of tree available, as well as the sponsorship options, can be found on the Council’s website: www.fareham.gov.uk/planning/trees/platinumcopse.aspx

Applications close on 1 April 2022 and tree planting will commence at both sites from the start of the planting season in November 2022. Once your application has been received, a member of the Council will call you back to discuss the options with you and take your payment.

Those who have sponsored a tree will receive a certificate and an invitation to an official unveiling event. Your name, or a name of your choice, will also be added to a role of honour displayed on the Council’s website.

Executive Member for Leisure and Community at Fareham Borough Council, Cllr Sue Walker, said: “I am delighted that this tree planting scheme has been so well received and proved so popular. Following the incredibly high demand, we have been able to create not one, but two, dedicated sites to commemorate Her Majesty The Queen’s 70-year reign.”

Executive Member for Streetscene at Fareham Borough Council, Cllr Ian Bastable, added: “I would like to thank all of the residents, community groups, organisations and local businesses who have sponsored a tree at The Queen’s Copse and also encourage anyone who missed out to sponsor a tree at The Platinum Copse. Both these sites will be tended by our Streetscene team, with help from local volunteers, to create a fitting tribute to Her Majesty The Queen, rich in nature and biodiversity.”
