Solidarity with Ukraine on International Day of Conscience

In two weeks, Fareham Borough Council will be working with Hampshire Cultural Trust to mark ‘International Day of Conscience’ by lighting Westbury Manor Museum in the colours of Ukraine.

Tuesday 5 April was declared International Day of Conscience by the General Assembly at the United Nations in 2019.  It was created to highlight the need for conditions of stability, wellbeing, peaceful and friendly relations based on respect for human rights and fundamental freedoms for all, without distinction as to race, sex, language or religion.

On this year’s International Day of Conscience, Councillors at Fareham Borough Council have asked for Westbury Manor Museum, on West Street, to be lit with the blue and yellow colours from the Ukrainian flag to express solidarity with the Ukrainian people after the Russian invasion.

Executive Leader of Fareham Borough Council, Cllr Seán Woodward, said: “I utterly condemn the horrific attacks taking place in Ukraine. We offer this gesture of support and solidarity with the people of Ukraine on International Day of Conscience at a time when these values seem to have been cast aside by the despotic president Putin. It seems fitting we should use Westbury Manor Museum as the landmark for this lighting as we reflect on past conflicts and the lessons our history teaches us.”
