Council ready to start Food Waste service

Fareham Borough Council is gearing up to start its weekly food waste collections from Monday 30 March.

It has taken delivery of five new food waste collection vehicles, all of which run on HVO fuel to reduce their carbon footprint.

The Council also has over 100,000 kitchen caddies, household food waste bins and communal food waste bins ready to be delivered to residents from the early new year. This will take a number of weeks to complete, so residents are urged to be patient and not to contact the team until all deliveries are completed. Regular updates will be displayed on the Council website below.

Reducing food waste is, by far, the best thing residents can do for the environment, as it currently makes up around a third of all household refuse in Fareham. While the Council has a statutory duty to deliver this new food waste service as part of national Simpler Recycling legislation, residents are encouraged to take part once the service starts as this will help improve the environmental impact of the Borough.

Executive Member for Streetscene, Cllr Ian Bastable, said: “Seeing over 100,000 outdoor food waste bins and kitchen caddies, all in one place, is an impressive sight to behold and shows the scale of the delivery operation we will be undertaking in the new year. Residents will receive everything they need to get started between January and the start of the new service, delivered directly to their doors. This will take a number of weeks to complete across over 52,000 households, so please bear with us and keep an eye on the Council’s website in the new year for regular updates.”
