Safeguarding
Modern Day Slavery
It's hard to believe that in the 21st Century Slavery is in existence. It can come in the form of sexual exploitation, labour exploitation, domestic servitude, EU status exploitation, forced criminality, financial exploitation and organ harvesting.
Over 2,000 people including children were referred to the UK Human Trafficking Centre in 2014.
The Hampshire and Isle of Wight Modern Day Slavery Partnership
has been set up to work in partnership with several agencies to fight slavery and support victims of slavery.

Child Sexual Exploitation
Sexual exploitation of children and young people under 18 involves exploitative situations, contexts and relationships where the young person (or third person/s) receive 'something' (e.g. food, accommodation, drugs, alcohol, cigarettes, affection, gifts, money) as a result of them performing, and/or others performing on them, sexual activities.
Child sexual exploitation can occur through the use of technology without the child's immediate recognition; for example being persuaded to post images on the internet/mobile phones without immediate payment or gain.
Violence, coercion and intimidation are common. Involvement in exploitative relationships is characterised by the child's or young person's limited availability of choice, as a result of their social, economic or emotional vulnerability.
A common feature of CSE is that the child or young person does not recognise the coercive nature of the relationship and does not see themselves as a victim of exploitation.
We are working to raise awareness, support people on how to spot the signs and importantly how to report such findings.

Prevent
What is Prevent?
Prevent is about safeguarding people and communities from the threat of terrorism. Prevent is part of the Government's counter-terrorism strategy CONTEST. It aims to stop people becoming terrorists or supporting terrorism.
The Prevent Strategy
Responds to the ideological challenge we face from terrorism and aspects of extremism, and the threat we face from those who promote these views:
- Provides practical help to prevent people from being drawn into terrorism and ensure they are given appropriate advice and support; and
- Works with a wide range of sectors (including education, criminal justice, faith, charities, online and health) where there are risks of radicalisation that we need to deal with.
- Prevent covers all forms of terrorism and extremism and some aspects of non-violent extremism.
The main aim of Prevent is to stop people from becoming terrorists or supporting terrorism
- At the heart of Prevent is safeguarding children and adults and providing early intervention to protect and divert people away from being drawn into terrorist activity.
- Prevent addresses all forms of terrorism, but continues to ensure resources and effort are allocated on the basis of threats to our national security.
