Prior to leasing the football pitch to Warsash Wasps, the pitch was used on a "pay and play" basis at weekends by adult teams from around the borough. Numerous complaints were received from local residents and users about bad language, litter and generally unpleasant issues. Many asked why the facility could not be used by local junior clubs.
Around this time the Warsash Wasps were outgrowing their New Road base and had teams playing not only there but also at Swanwick, Titchfield and elsewhere in the Borough and they approached the Council to explore whether Fareham Borough Council would offer them a lease to enable them to use the ground for matches on weekends.
The Council consulted with residents from a wide surrounding area and there was overwhelming support, mainly because a local club would understand their commitment to the Warsash public, would curb bad language and be more accountable.
The lease was therefore granted and the Wasps assumed responsibility for pitch maintenance and cutting. The Council retains responsibility for all other areas including the playground, youth shelter, changing rooms at either end and grass cutting outside of the football pitch.
The recreation ground remains and will continue to remain a facility for use by the public. In 2011 Fareham Borou8gh Council refurbished the changing rooms and a mini-makeover of the playground is imminent with a major refurbishment in a couple of years.
