Press Release

Assheton Court

6 October 2021

Have your say on affordable housing redevelopment

Fareham Housing has launched a consultation on its initial redevelopment ideas for the existing sheltered housing scheme at Assheton Court, Portchester, to bring forward additional, badly needed homes for older people.

The consultation sets out the changes that are being considered and is now available online: https://www.fareham.gov.uk/have_your_say/asshetoncourt/.  It will run until 1 November at 5pm.

Fareham Housing is engaging directly with the existing residents of Assheton Court but would also like residents in Portchester to take the time to have their say on the initial redevelopment proposals for the site. Any feedback received can then be considered to better inform the final design, ahead of a planning application being submitted for the site in 2022.

Assheton Court, in Castle Street Portchester, was built in 1971 and currently comprises 33 flats. Fareham Housing is proposing a new older persons’ affordable housing scheme which makes better use of this brownfield site to provide more, better quality homes.

This redevelopment would provide additional homes in a central location for shops, services, public transport and community groups to help ensure that residents do not become isolated. The proposals also outline that the new flats will be greener, more energy efficient and more accessible for elderly residents.

Executive Member for Housing at Fareham Borough Council, Cllr Fred Birkett, said: “I encourage residents to have their say on the initial proposals from Fareham Housing. There is a real need for more sheltered housing for older residents across the Borough and this redevelopment offers an opportunity to create more, better quality, homes for those who really need them.”
